Student Wellbeing

At Noorat Primary School, we live by our four guiding values of Excellence, Care, Respect & Responsibility. Everything we do is linked back to our values which were selected based on feedback from our Staff, Students and Parents.

Therapy Dog - Meet spud

Spud is our therapy dog who attends school with his Carer, Vanessa. During class time, Spud makes his way around to check in on students, and gives them a soft and warm friend to chat to - he’s the best listener!

BREAKFAST CLUB

Our School Breakfast Club provides a warm and welcoming space for students when they arrive at school.

Parent volunteers and staff help set up our Breakfast Club in our large multi-purpose room and provide students with a variety of healthy, Victorian grown or manufactured breakfast foods. We run our breakfast club daily at no charge to any child. We also utilise this program to provide fresh fruit to every student every day, whenever they want or need.

Not only do we remove the barrier of children being hungry and having difficulties learning, children form positive relationships with their peers, staff and volunteers.

individual student needs

We cater to the individual needs of every child at Noorat. Inclusive practices are embedded in our daily routines and approaches to education. You will enter our learning spaces and see a wide range of tools to assist the varying needs of students; everything from wobble chairs and sensory mats to weighted teddies / blankets, earmuffs and flexible seating options. We provide opportunities for every child to be their unique and best self.

This is supported and strengthened through our Hands on Learning program, as well as programs to celebrate individuality and diversity through programs such as the I CAN Network’s Imagination Club and The Song Room. Students also have lunchtime clubs to come together with peers who have a common interest, as well as our Gaga Pit.

Through these programs and our Health curriculum, we celebrate individuality and neurodiversity, ensuring every child feels safe and connected.

The whole child - berry street educational model, Life skills go and zones of regulation

At Noorat Primary School, we know that one program does not fit all. For this reason, we utilise research to carefully select programs which will meet the needs of our students.

All staff are trained to understand and implement trauma-informed practices and this forms the underlying base for all of our work. Teachers are trained in the Berry Street Educational Model where we support individual student needs, implement regular brain breaks and work with each student to create their personalised Ready to Learn Plan.

Using Life Skills Go enables all students to do emotional check-ins throughout the day to build their social literacy through building emotional vocabulary. Noorat students practice the evidence-based strategies that build resilience and improve mental health.

The Zones of Regulation are another tool we utilise to assist students in identifying their emotions and how they are feeling, as well as the strategies needed to move back into the green zone for learning.

POSITIVE EDUCATION

Positive Education at Noorat Primary School draws on an ongoing framework that supports and applies positive psychology and teaching practices to enable learning and the individual to flourish.

Working closely with our School Values, the focus of embedding Positive Education into the Noorat Primary School community (staff, students and families) is on gaining an innate awareness of positive psychology and the impact it has on education. The science behind positive psychology has shown that positive education can have a significant and lasting impact on wellbeing.

The four steps are to Learn It, Live It, Teach It & Embed It.
